Congress leader Chermesh Sharma has filed a petition with the President's Secretariat to save an Indian woman from execution in Yemen. The woman, Nimisha Priya, a nurse from Kerala, has been sentenced to death for murdering a Yemeni citizen in 2017.
Chermesh Sharma, a former director of the Rajasthan Seeds Corporation and Congress leader, has urged the President, Draupadi Murmu, to intervene diplomatically and legally to save Nimisha's life. He has also appealed to the National Human Rights Commission to take immediate action.
According to the petition, Nimisha Priya was working as a nurse in Yemen and had opened a hospital with a Yemeni citizen, Talal Abdo Mahdi, as her partner. However, Mahdi allegedly exploited and tortured her, confiscating her passport and documents. To retrieve her documents, Nimisha administered an injection to Mahdi, which led to his death due to an overdose.
The petition states that the killing was unintentional and requests the government to intervene diplomatically and legally to save Nimisha's life. It also urges the government to approach the Yemeni government, appeal to the Yemeni President or Supreme Court, and seek a stay on the execution from international courts.
Nimisha's execution is scheduled for July 16, and efforts are being made in India to save her life.
